What are chemical peels? Chemical peels are clinical treatments designed to exfoliate or remove the outer layers of skin. These solutions are used to assist in the drying up of active acne, dislodgement and purging of blackheads, reducing superficial wrinkles and scarring, improving the appearance of mature changing skin, rectifying sun damage, and modifying and lightening pigmentary disorders (sun or age spots).
What will you experience during and after a peel. Depending on the treatment you receive, you may experience some temporary discomfort of stinging or warm flushing, similar to a burning sensation. This will generally fade within 5 minutes. During the next few hours you may experience some tightening of the skin, which may last for 2 to 3 days. Your face may appear red, and progressively become a deeper red, possibly a tan to brown color, depending on application and product variances. For most patients, peeling begins to occur within 48 hours, however with a light superficial treatment, you may observe only 1 or 2 days of light flaking. It is impossible to pre-determine how much peeling will occur. The use of deeper penetrating and more active solutions may result in sensitivity for several hours afterward and some significant peeling for up to 10 days. Your skin may feel tight and dry and you may have redness for up to 10 days. To enhance your treatments and relieve discomfort for the week to 10 days following your treatment, you are advised to do the following:
